How do I become a teen volunteer?
The first step in volunteering is submitting a Teen Volunteer Application. Click here to submit an online application. Typically, the Teen Librarian will contact you within 1-2 days. If you don't hear anything within that timeframe, please e-mail the Teen Librarian directly at email@example.com.
How old do I need to be?
Potential volunteers must be at least 13 years old and in 7th grade. If a teen wants to volunteer during the summer and they are entering 7th grade, that is also acceptable. Please contact the Teen Librarian more information.
What do Teen Volunteers do?
That all depends on you! We will do our best to match you with opportunities and tasks best suited to your interests and availability as indicated in your volunteer application. Possible duties include:
Assisting in programs and story-times for children
Decorating and organizing the Teen Space
Cleaning books and other library materials
Reviewing teen books, movies, and more
Offering ideas for new teen programs and ways to improve teen services at the library
Attending TLC every month!
When can I volunteer / How many hours can I get?
Once you become an official Teen Volunteer, we will schedule you according to your availability and the library's needs. For example, if you would like to volunteer on a weekly basis, we may be able to assign you to ongoing drop-in duties such as book cleaning. Volunteers for programs and other special duties are needed on a less regular basis. For volunteer opportunities like these, the Teen Librarian will contact you directly when the need arises.
Why should I volunteer?
Teen Volunteers earn valuable experience that looks great on college applications and resumes. Many Teen Volunteers ask for and receive letters of recommendation from the Teen Librarian. Volunteering at the library is also a great way to give back to your community while earning a great reputation. Volunteering is fun. The library treats teen volunteers to parties and other social gatherings throughout the year.
Interested in volunteering at the library over the summer? We've developed a schedule of volunteer opportunities for teens to review and sign up for. This summer, our volunteers will have the opportunity to work directly with our staff as they seek to develop interesting and engaging programs for our patrons. For example, you can help us build a planetarium, manage and create artistic pieces with children, and assist with storytelling hours. It all starts with submitting a Teen Volunteer Application. Teen Library Council (TLC)
Earn an hour of volunteer service every month by attending TLC. During TLC, volunteers meet in the Teen Space to discuss and help plan programs, crafts, and other activities for teens at the library with the Teen Librarian. New members seeking volunteer and leadership opportunities are always welcome! Find out more about TLC.
